Journalists often say it’s the small details that make a story and in a way David Cowan uses small details to tell tales about Scotland’s villages, towns and cities.

A television reporter for STV News based in Edinburgh, David has produced a series of photomontages under the title Scotland in Detail.

“When I was on holiday years ago I used to take pictures of old shop signs and odd things like gargoyles with cans of coke stuck in front of them,” he says.

“Then in my job I started spending a lot of time hanging around the courts and council buildings on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, with a cameraman called Steve Kydd who knows a huge amount about the town.

“He would point out things, like the memorial to a boy who survived when a tenement collapsed, then I would spot other things and it began to open up my eyes to what’s there.

“When I got my first digital camera I just started wandering around taking hundreds of pictures of that kind of thing. Eventually I worked out how to put together big montages, and friends started asking if they could have copies…and it all built up from there.”

“It works anywhere with a bit of character. Once you slow down and start looking, you see all these amazing wee details. The old Victorian and Georgian towns have incredible architecture but I also love taking pics of menus in café windows or signs advertising haggis. I’m working my way round the country.

“I’m not pretending for a second that it’s fine art photography but when you jumble them all together it gives you a bit of an impression of the character of a place. Local people love trying to work out where things are, and other folk seem to just like the atmosphere of the whole thing.”

David has produced montages of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, the East Neuk of Fife, Kirkcaldy and East Lothian with many more to come, including Perth, Stirling and Linlithgow. The big full colour A2 prints have gone as far afield as Australia, South Africa and the United States.

“I’ve started making ones from when I’ve been on holiday,” he says. “There’s a few of France and Italy but I can’t really call them Scotland in Detail…it’s great fun.”

David’s work can be viewed at www.scotlandindetail.com
